Raw Feeding vs Dry Kibble: The Truth Every Dog Owner Needs to Know

If you’ve spent any time in dog owner forums, Facebook groups, or even the dog food aisle recently, you’ll have noticed something: raw feeding advocates are loud, passionate, and absolutely convinced that kibble is slowly killing your dog. They’ll tell you that dry dog food is ultra-processed poison, that it’s full of fillers and mystery meat, and that any caring owner would switch to raw immediately.

We respectfully disagree — and we’re going to explain exactly why.

At Sneyd’s Wonderdog, we’ve been producing premium working dog food from our factory in North Lincolnshire for over 40 years. We feed the dogs of gamekeepers, farmers, gun dog trainers, and working dog handlers across the UK — people who need their dogs performing at their absolute best, day in and day out. These aren’t people who tolerate mediocre nutrition. And they overwhelmingly feed kibble.

This article takes apart the raw feeding argument, addresses every major claim head-on, and makes the evidence-based case for why a high-quality dry kibble remains the best all-round diet for the vast majority of dogs.

The Raw Feeding Argument — And Why It Falls Short

The raw feeding movement is built on one central idea: dogs are descendants of wolves, wolves eat raw meat, therefore dogs should eat raw meat. It’s a neat, intuitive argument. It’s also fundamentally flawed.

Dogs are not wolves. Domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) have been co-evolving alongside humans for somewhere between 15,000 and 40,000 years. During that time, their digestive systems, genetics, and nutritional needs have changed significantly. Studies have shown that domestic dogs have developed additional copies of the amylase gene — the enzyme that helps digest starch — compared to wolves. This is a direct adaptation to a diet that includes cooked grains and carbohydrates. Dogs are not obligate carnivores. They are, in scientific terms, omnivores that have adapted to thrive on a varied diet.

The argument that dogs must eat raw because it is “natural” also ignores the reality that a wolf’s natural diet is nutritionally inconsistent, frequently inadequate, and comes with a significant risk of parasites, bacterial contamination, and broken teeth from bones. Wild wolves don’t live as long as well-fed domestic dogs. “Natural” is not automatically synonymous with optimal.

Addressing the Raw Feeding Claims One by One

Claim: Kibble is full of fillers and low-quality ingredients

This is sometimes true — of cheap, budget kibble. Brands that use vague ingredient labels like “animal derivatives,” cereal fillers, and artificial additives are rightly criticised. But tarring all kibble with the same brush is like saying all human food is junk food because McDonald’s exists.

A premium working dog kibble lists specific, high-quality protein sources with transparent ingredient declarations. While regulatory terminology such as “Meat and Animal Derivatives” is used in some complete dog foods — including some Wonderdog diets — what matters is whether the manufacturer specifies exactly which species are included. At Wonderdog, we guarantee that the specific protein sources are always clearly detailed within the ingredients — for example, our Original recipe specifies Beef, Chicken, Lamb and Pork within the declaration. No mystery meat. No vague sources. Just honest nutrition at honest prices. Our Wonderdog Special and Wonderdog Original ranges deliver 24% protein and 12% fat — nutritional profiles built for dogs that actually work for a living.

Claim: Raw food is more nutritious because it isn’t cooked

This claim sounds compelling but misunderstands how nutrition works. Cooking does alter some nutrients — but it also increases the digestibility of protein and carbohydrates, meaning the dog can actually absorb and use more of what it eats. The extrusion process used to make quality kibble is carefully controlled to preserve nutritional value while ensuring the food is safe, stable, and digestible.

Raw feeding proponents often compare their diet to the “ancestral” diet of dogs, claiming kibble has dramatically lower protein and higher carbohydrates. In reality, a good working dog kibble can contain 24–30% protein on a dry matter basis — far higher than many raw diets once water content is accounted for. The moisture content of raw food (typically 60–70% water) inflates the apparent protein percentage significantly.

Claim: Raw feeding leads to healthier coats, better digestion and more energy

These are the most frequently cited benefits by raw feeding advocates, and they are almost entirely anecdotal. Owner-reported improvements in coat condition, stool quality, and energy levels are subject to enormous bias — people who switch to raw are typically more engaged with their dog’s health in general. They may also be switching away from genuinely poor quality cheap kibble, so the improvement reflects a better diet, not the raw aspect specifically.

A 2021 peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science that directly compared clinical health markers in raw-fed versus kibble-fed dogs found only a “slight” improvement in coat condition score in the raw-fed group — and notably, raw-fed owners were significantly more likely to use dietary supplements and undertake sporting activities with their dogs. In other words, the lifestyle around the food matters as much as the food itself.

Working dog owners who feed Wonderdog regularly report outstanding coat condition, firm stools, and exceptional energy levels. That is what a high-quality, properly formulated kibble delivers.

Claim: Kibble causes obesity, diabetes, and chronic disease

This claim typically cites cheap, high-carbohydrate, low-quality kibble — and lumps all dry dog food together. It’s the equivalent of blaming all human food for obesity because some people eat nothing but ultra-processed snacks.

Obesity in dogs is caused by overfeeding relative to exercise — regardless of diet type. Raw-fed dogs can absolutely become obese if fed too much. A precisely measured, high-protein, appropriately calorie-dense kibble fed according to the feeding guidelines is not a pathway to obesity. It is a pathway to a lean, fit, healthy dog.

The Real Risks of Raw Feeding That Nobody Talks About

What Makes a Kibble Actually Good?

While raw feeding advocates are happy to list the alleged risks of kibble, they’re often less forthcoming about the very real, evidence-backed risks of raw feeding.

Bacterial Contamination

Raw meat consistently tests positive for dangerous bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, and Campylobacter. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have confirmed this. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the British Veterinary Association (BVA), and the European Scientific Committee on Animal Health all advise against raw feeding, primarily on public health grounds.

Raw feeders often argue that dogs’ more acidic digestive systems protect them. This is partially true — dogs are less likely to show clinical symptoms than humans. But they still shed bacteria in their faeces, contaminate surfaces in your home, and can absolutely infect vulnerable people — children, elderly family members, and immunocompromised individuals — who come into contact with the dog or its environment.

This is not a theoretical risk. There are documented cases of human illness linked to raw-fed pets.

Nutritional Imbalance

DIY raw diets are notoriously difficult to balance correctly. Studies have found that the vast majority of home-prepared raw diets are deficient in key nutrients including calcium, phosphorus, zinc, vitamin D, and essential fatty acids. Even many commercial raw foods have been found to be nutritionally incomplete.

A properly formulated, complete dry kibble meets precise FEDIAF (European Pet Food Industry Federation) nutritional standards. Every bag of Wonderdog is a complete diet — meaning your dog gets everything it needs in the correct proportions, with no supplementation required.

Bone Hazards

Raw bones are a staple of many raw feeding protocols. They are also a genuine veterinary emergency risk. Splintering bones can cause intestinal perforation, blockages, and fractured teeth. Vets consistently report a correlation between raw bone feeding and emergency consultations. This is not scaremongering — it is a well-documented clinical reality.

Cost

Quality raw feeding is expensive. Pre-made commercial raw food for a medium-to-large working dog costs between £80 and £150 per month. Wonderdog’s 15kg Original feeds a medium active dog for around 75 days at a cost of just £38.99 — that works out to roughly £16 per month. For working dog handlers running multiple dogs, the economics of raw feeding are simply not viable.

What Makes a Kibble Actually Good?

Not all kibble is created equal, and it’s worth being clear about what separates a genuinely high-quality dry food from the cheap supermarket options that raw feeders rightly criticise.

Look for these markers of quality:

  • Named protein sources as the first ingredient — beef, chicken, salmon, not “animal derivatives” or “meat meal”
  • High protein content — 24% or above for active and working dogs
  • Appropriate fat content — 10–14% for working dogs with high energy demands
  • No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives
  • Manufactured in the UK or EU under strict food safety regulations
  • A transparent, honest ingredient declaration — if the manufacturer won’t tell you what’s in it, walk away

All Wonderdog diets meet every one of these criteria. Our Hypoallergenic range — including Chicken & Rice and Grain Free Salmon & Trout — is specifically designed for dogs with sensitivities, delivering all the benefits raw feeders claim to be chasing, without the risks.

The Working Dog Perspective

The raw feeding debate is largely an urban and suburban phenomenon. Go to any working gundog kennel, sheepdog farm, or police dog facility in the UK and you will find high-quality dry kibble as the diet of choice. Why? Because working dog handlers judge food by results.

A working spaniel covering 30 miles of rough terrain on a shoot day needs precisely calibrated, dense, reliable energy. A sheepdog working three times a day needs consistent nutrition without digestive disruption. These dogs cannot afford to be laid up with a bacterial stomach infection, a bone splinter, or nutritional deficiencies caused by an improperly balanced raw diet.

Wonderdog’s Active Range was built for exactly this purpose. High protein. High fat. Complete nutrition. Manufactured to consistent standards in our own factory. Trusted by working dog professionals for over four decades.

Raw vs Kibble: The Honest Summary

We’re not saying raw feeding is impossible to do well. A commercial raw diet from a reputable, PFMA-registered manufacturer, handled hygienically, fed to a healthy adult dog, can be a nutritionally adequate option. But it is more expensive, more complicated, more risky from a food safety perspective, and the evidence for it being superior to a premium kibble simply does not exist.

What raw feeding advocates are actually arguing against — with some justification — is cheap, low-quality, filler-heavy kibble. The answer to that is not to abandon dry food altogether. It is to buy better kibble.

A high-quality working dog kibble delivers:

  • Complete, balanced nutrition meeting rigorous FEDIAF standards
  • High, bioavailable protein from named meat sources
  • Zero risk of Salmonella, E. coli, or Listeria contamination
  • Long shelf life, easy storage, and straightforward feeding
  • Significantly lower cost than commercial raw feeding
  • Decades of clinical evidence and veterinary support behind it
